Fitch Ratings reveals approximate date for end of Ukraine war

08 December 2024 12:33

The US rating agency Fitch Ratings has forecasted that an agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine may be reached in 2025.

“In our view, despite some territorial gains by Russia since end-2023, Western military support and strong resolve should allow Ukraine to prevent significant additional territorial losses,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the agency’s report.

According to the report, “the parameters of the negotiated ceasefire, including security guarantees for Ukraine and the territories that would remain under Russian control, remain uncertain.”

“The incoming US administration's stated policy objective to end the war could lead to a negotiated ceasefire, but a peace agreement is unlikely due to difficult concessions that would be required from both sides,” said the report.

To recap, multiple proposals have been tabled, including plans by China and Brazil, which suggest freezing the battlefield and initiating peace talks under international oversight. However, these plans have been met with scepticism from Ukraine, as they do not include Russia's withdrawal from occupied territories. Western nations are also debating whether a ceasefire would simply allow Russia time to regroup militarily.

Russia insists on terms tantamount to Ukrainian capitulation, including Ukraine's withdrawal from NATO ambitions and recognition of Russian-occupied territories. These demands remain unacceptable to Kyiv and its Western allies.
