Five Kenyan security officers killed in clash near Somalia border

Five Kenyan security personnel were killed in a clash with suspected Al-Shabaab militants near the Somali border, according to a police report cited by Reuters.

The incident took place on Tuesday, July 28, in Mandera County, where a Special Operations Group (SOG) patrol came under attack in the Wantey Dam area.

Reinforcements dispatched to the scene later struck an improvised explosive device, destroying an armoured vehicle, though no casualties were reported among those additional forces.

Kenyan authorities said security operations are ongoing to track down those responsible.

Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamist group based in Somalia, has carried out frequent cross-border attacks in Kenya. The group was founded in 2004 as the armed wing of the Islamic Courts Union.
