Flash floods kill at least 10 in northern Afghanistan, homes destroyed

22 May 2026 11:21

At least 10 people, including women and children, have been killed in flash floods that struck multiple districts in northern Afghanistan, as severe weather continues to impact large parts of the country.

According to Tolo News, the fatalities occurred overnight in Baghlan Province, where sudden flooding followed intense rainfall. Local authorities say the floods caused widespread destruction across affected communities.

The head of the provincial emergency management department, Hedayatullah Hamdad, reported that more than 100 homes were destroyed by the heavy rains. In addition, thousands of acres of agricultural land were inundated, dealing a severe blow to the province’s rural economy, which is already under strain.

In a separate incident, extreme weather also struck southern Afghanistan. In Kandahar Province, strong winds on Wednesday night killed three people and left six others injured, further highlighting the scale of the ongoing weather-related emergencies across the country.

Afghanistan has experienced a wave of severe weather in recent days, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, storms, and lightning across multiple regions. The national meteorological service has warned that precipitation is expected to continue in the coming days, increasing the risk of additional flooding, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
