India faces deadly monsoon disaster as floods and landslides claim 25 lives

At least 25 people have been killed in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in northern and northeastern India, according to local authorities. 

Officials also warned that the situation could worsen, with intense rainfall expected to continue in the coming days, Caliber.Az reports via Reuters.

In the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, at least 15 people were killed in the districts of Poonch, Rajouri and Doda, while several others remain missing.

In Nagaland state, landslides claimed the lives of nine people. Local authorities said rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of four victims.

Another person died in flooding in neighbouring Assam, where the disaster has affected more than 57,000 residents across seven districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the active monsoon phase is expected to continue across the northwestern, eastern and northeastern regions of the country over the next six to seven days.
