FM Wang Yi urges UK to uphold one-China principle, build stable future ties

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on July 23 expressed hope that the United Kingdom will continue to follow the one-China principle and preserve the political foundation of bilateral relations.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in Manila, saying that ties between China and the UK, as major countries and permanent UN Security Council members, carry significance beyond bilateral relations, Caliber.Az reports via Xinhua.

According to Wang, China has taken note of the new UK government’s stated commitment to ensuring continuity and stability in its China policy. He stressed that Beijing expects London to adhere to the one-China principle and safeguard the political basis of cooperation between the two countries.

He added that China is ready to work closely with the new British government through high-level exchanges, strengthen political trust, expand practical cooperation and promote the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.

Miliband, for his part, said the new UK government attaches great importance to relations with China and will continue efforts to develop a long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership that serves the strategic interests of both sides.

The two officials also exchanged views on international and regional issues, including developments in the Middle East and the Gulf region.
