Foreign Policy: EU leaders confused by Putin's Trojan horse
06 August 2022 13:06
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is confusing EU leaders with his attitude toward Russia.
"The Trojan horse of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin inside the European Union. Once again, EU leaders are wondering what is behind Budapest's almost obsessive deference to the Kremlin," Amanda Coakley said in her article for Foreign Policy.
Hungary's policy of expressing disagreement with the EU's common policy underlines the obvious lack of unity in Europe, she said. According to the analyst, the country has never criticized Russia since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. Moreover, Hungarian authorities regularly oppose anti-Russian sanctions.
