Former German president: Islam has become part of Germany

Former German President Christian Wulff has reiterated his view that Islam has become an integral part of Germany.

Speaking to Cologne-based radio station Domradio ahead of German Unity Day, Wulff reaffirmed one of his most controversial statements from his presidency. In 2010, he said that “Islam has also become part of Germany”.

Wulff, who served as German president from 2010 to 2012, said he would make the same statement today.

“Today, I would say exactly the same thing,” the former president said.

He noted that more than six million Muslims live in Germany, many of whom have become German citizens.

“They have their mosques, their imams and their religious education,” Wulff said.

He added that these institutions and practices should operate in accordance with Germany’s Basic Law and in the German language, contributing to peaceful coexistence rather than confrontation.
