Former Israeli army officer urges diplomacy to avoid Lebanon “quagmire”
16 March 2026 14:53
Yair Golan, leader of the centre-left Democrats party and former deputy chief of the Israel Defense Forces, has urged the Israeli government to prioritize diplomacy over military action in Lebanon.
He warned against allowing the country to be drawn into “an endless war” similar to past conflicts in Gaza, Al Jazeera reports.
“I know Lebanon. I was the commander of Northern Command. I spent most of my professional years as a fighter and commander there,” Golan said on social media platform X.
“And I say clearly: We must exhaust every diplomatic option to the fullest before sending divisions into the Lebanese quagmire,” he added.
