Former NATO Secretary General calls for greater tolerance toward US
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that European allies should do everything possible to ensure that the United States remains a reliable partner within the Alliance.
He made the statement in an interview with CNN.
When asked about the reliability of the US as an ally amid statements by President Donald Trump, Stoltenberg acknowledged disagreements between Washington and European countries but stressed that NATO’s security is only possible through unity among its members.
According to him, Europe needs to pursue policies that will allow the US to remain a stable partner in the Alliance in the future as well.
Earlier, Trump said he intended to reconsider the US approach to NATO, criticising allies for insufficient support of the American position, including on issues related to Iran, and pointing to Washington’s high defence spending burden.
