Former PM Attal enters France’s 2027 presidential race

23 May 2026 11:25

Former French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of France and will participate in the 2027 election, according to BFM TV.

“Yes, I have decided to run for president of the republic,” Attal said during a visit to the Aveyron department.

Attal currently serves as secretary general of the Renaissance party, which was founded by President Emmanuel Macron. Macron’s term in office is set to expire in May 2027, and he is not eligible to seek re-election, having already served two terms.

Attal is positioning himself as a potential successor to Macron. However, as noted by BFM TV, his candidacy does not enjoy unanimous support within the political landscape.

According to polling data from Elabe, Attal is projected to receive approximately 11.5% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election, a result that would be insufficient for him to advance to the second round.

Attal previously made history as the youngest prime minister of the Fifth Republic. He held the position for less than a year, serving from January 9 to September 5, 2024.
