A South Korean Navy patrol aircraft crashed on May 29 in the country’s southeastern region, according to local police.

Authorities stated that the incident occurred near the city of Pohang, where emergency crews, including firefighters and rescue personnel, were dispatched after residents reported the fall of an unidentified object followed by an explosion, Caliber.Az reports, citing AP.

The Nambu Police Station in Pohang later confirmed that the aircraft involved was a Lockheed P-3CK Orion, a maritime patrol plane used by the South Korean Navy. Officials noted that it was not yet known whether there were any fatalities or injuries as a result of the crash.

A military aircraft has crashed in the city of Pohang, located on South Korea’s eastern coast. 

The incident occurred on May 29 in the Nam-gu district of Pohang, within Gyeongsangbuk-do province, Caliber.Az reports via Korean media.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the mountainside near the crash site, prompting initial speculation that a civilian aircraft may have gone down. However, updated information later confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the Republic of Korea’s Navy. There were four individuals on board at the time of the crash.

In a separate aviation incident reported earlier this month, a small Cessna 550 crashed into residential buildings in the San Diego area of California. That crash, which occurred on May 22, resulted in fires that affected approximately 15 homes and vehicles. Local authorities evacuated residents from the affected area as a safety precaution.
