France apologises to US over post published on UN account

14 September 2026 14:30

France has apologised to the United States over a post published on a UN account that said, “The United States was once a beacon of human rights. But that is no longer the case.”

The apology came after Washington blocked the appointment of a new French ambassador in response, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The dispute began when the US voted alongside North Korea and Russia against extending the term of the head of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

US representatives also walked out of a UN Security Council meeting while the French ambassador was speaking.

France has now said the disagreement concerned “a single vote” and does not threaten relations between the allies.
