France, Britain lead diplomatic talks on maritime security, Iran measures

14 April 2026 16:13

France and the United Kingdom are spearheading a series of diplomatic meetings this week aimed at shaping a potential multinational mission focused on maritime security and freedom of navigation, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

The talks, organised through multiple working groups, will address a range of issues including possible economic measures against Iran, coordination with industry stakeholders, and strategies to safeguard maritime transit, sources told Reuters

Senior diplomats are holding preliminary discussions ahead of a high-level meeting scheduled for April 17, which will be co-chaired by British and French leaders. The agenda is expected to prioritise maintaining open shipping routes, particularly in light of concerns over the Strait of Hormuz.

Participants will also explore contingency plans if the vital waterway remains closed, including the imposition of further economic measures on Iran. Additional focus areas include securing the release of detained seafarers and vessels, as well as enhancing cooperation with the private sector to ensure readiness to resume shipping operations once conditions stabilise.
