France reacts sharply to Germany's reproaches for insufficient support for Ukraine

23 January 2024 10:25

France reacted sharply to reproaches from Germany for insufficient support for Ukraine; German Chancellor Olaf Scholz demanded an increase in military assistance to Ukraine.

According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Ukraine failed in its counteroffensive, and Republicans in the US Congress do not want to provide new financial assistance to the Ukrainian side. In this regard, everyone in Europe fears that Ukraine could lose to Russia or face serious difficulties as early as 2024.

Therefore, a number of European leaders called for increasing the supply of weapons and ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Scholz primarily belongs to this group.

According to the newspaper, the German Chancellor openly demanded that other European Union countries follow the example of his country, which doubled aid to Ukraine this year to €8 billion. His appeal was primarily addressed to Italy, Spain and France.

A European diplomat told the newspaper that Germany promised Ukraine €8 billion in 2024, the Netherlands – €2.5 billion, while “nothing like that was heard” from France.

According to information from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the head of the French Ministry of Defense, Sebastian Lecornu, reacted “biliously” to such reproaches.

He commented on information from the Kiel Institute of World Economics that the French state provides less assistance to Ukraine than Poland, Great Britain, Germany, the Nordic countries and the Baltic states. According to Lecornu, they “mixed everything together.”
