France's heatwave matches 43-year record for duration

The current heatwave in France has matched the July 1983 record, lasting 23 days, Franceinfo reports, citing experts from the country's national weather service.

The experts said, in 2026, mainland France has experienced three heatwaves: 14 days in June, 16 days in July and 23 days since late July.

The latest heatwave has already surpassed the duration of the heatwaves recorded in 2003 and 2006.

If it continues into Friday, August 21, it will set a new record since records began in 1947.
