France's Interior Ministry servers hit by cyberattack
E-mail servers of the French Interior Ministry were targeted by a cyberattack this week, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.
According to the minister, the attacker gained access to a number of files, though there is no evidence they were seriously compromised, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.
He added that the ministry has strengthened security measures and tightened system access for employees while the investigation continues, with no information yet on the origin of the attack.
A few months ago, France publicly accused Russia’s military intelligence‑linked hacking group APT28 (also known as Fancy Bear) of conducting a long campaign of cyberattacks against French institutions, including attempts to influence elections and disrupt national media, highlighting the geopolitical dimension of state‑level cyber threats.
Between 2021 and 2024, France’s cybersecurity agency ANSSI reported that GRU‑linked hackers targeted a wide range of French government agencies, private sector entities, and organisations tied to the Paris Olympics, underlining persistent threats to critical infrastructure.
French authorities have recently ramped up cybersecurity efforts, including public attribution of foreign actors and cooperation with international partners, reflecting evolving state responses to increasingly frequent and complex cyber threats.
