France signs contract to develop high-power laser defence system
05 September 2025 11:42
The French Defence Ministry has signed a contract with a consortium of defence companies — MBDA, Safran Electronics & Defense, Thales, and CILAS — to develop a prototype high-power laser weapon, the ministry confirmed on September 5.
According to the French armaments agency, the new system, designated the next-generation laser defence system (Syderal), is designed to strengthen short-range air defence and counter drone threats, Caliber.Az reports.
Syderal is expected to be capable of neutralising tactical drones, rocket and mortar rounds, as well as guided munitions, operating effectively both during the day and at night.
The ministry said integration of the laser system into the French armed forces is planned for 2030.
