France summons G7 ministers amid Greenland dispute

19 January 2026 15:43

France’s finance minister, Roland Lescure, is set to convene a meeting of his G7 counterparts in the “coming days” to discuss trade and sovereignty issues.

The move comes after US President Donald Trump threatened punitive tariffs because Denmark and its EU allies did not acquiesce to his desire to take control of Greenland, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

“We fully support Greenland and Denmark. Blackmail among friends is, of course, unacceptable,” Lescure said.

On January 17, Trump announced escalating tariffs on several European allies—including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the UK—over their opposition to US control of Greenland.

Ten per cent tariffs are set to take effect on February 1, rising to 25 per cent from June 1, and will continue until Greenland is ceded to the US.

European leaders strongly rejected the move. French President Emmanuel Macron called the threats unacceptable, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised targeting allies over NATO security, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned the tariffs would harm transatlantic prosperity and benefit rivals like China and Russia.
