France warns NATO not intended for Strait of Hormuz operations

France has said NATO is not intended to conduct military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, as debate continues over the alliance’s role in Middle East security, Iranian media reports.

“It is a military alliance concerned with the security of the Euro-Atlantic region. It is not designed to carry out operations in the Strait of Hormuz,” Alice Rufo, France’s junior army minister, said on April 1.

She added that such action could breach international law.

Her remarks come amid heightened tensions following comments by Donald Trump, who said he is considering pulling the United States out of NATO after allies did not support US military action against Iran.
