France weighs joining UK-German programme to develop long-range missiles

23 May 2026 12:00

France is considering joining a joint UK-German programme aimed at developing long-range ground-based missiles, according to Financial Times, which cited sources familiar with the negotiations.

The project, launched in 2024 by the United Kingdom and Germany, envisions a family of missiles with a range exceeding 2,000 kilometres, designed to strike targets deep in enemy territory. The programme remains at a conceptual stage and includes both cruise and hypersonic missile development.

Paris is showing interest amid broader European efforts to reduce reliance on the United States for advanced weapons systems and to strengthen long-range strike capabilities. Trilateral consultations involving France, the UK, and Germany are reportedly being discussed for early June.

The Financial Times noted that France’s potential involvement aligns with President Emmanuel Macron’s policy of reinforcing Europe’s conventional military capabilities to complement its nuclear deterrent.

Germany supports the initiative, while the UK has expressed concerns regarding programme governance and the distribution of industrial responsibilities among participating countries.
