Freight train carrying hazardous materials derails in US, prompting evacuations PHOTO

01 July 2026 09:17

A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in the US state of Pennsylvania on June 30, prompting temporary evacuations and shelter-in-place orders before authorities confirmed there were no leaks or injuries.

The derailment occurred at about 2:15 p.m. local time in Bensalem, Bucks County, when 16 of the 72 cars on an eastbound CSX freight train left the tracks, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The derailed cars, located toward the rear of the train, overturned.

Authorities initially raised concerns because three of the derailed cars were carrying hazardous materials, including one containing an alcohol-based substance and another transporting acid. However, emergency crews found no evidence of any leaks.

"There is no threat to public safety at this time," said William McVey, Bensalem's director of public safety. "We're very thankful that nothing is leaking."

The incident prompted officials to evacuate residents living near the tracks along Grove Avenue and issue shelter-in-place orders for surrounding areas. The restrictions were later lifted after emergency crews determined there was no ongoing danger.

Among those evacuated was Bensalem resident Trey Gale, who said he initially did not realise what had happened.

"I was in the living room playing video games; all you hear is 'errrrrrr,'" Gale recalled.

"Five minutes later cops came knocked on our door said we have to evacuate," Gale said.

Residents expressed relief after being allowed to return to their homes.

"All my neighbors had to evacuate. I have elderly neighbors; some don't drive," said Keyanna Myrick of Bensalem. No injuries were reported.

The derailment also disrupted transport in the area. Although the affected tracks are not used by the regional passenger operator SEPTA, service on the nearby West Trenton Line was suspended. Bristol Road was closed between Old Lincoln Highway and Brownsville Road.

CSX crews are working to clear the wreckage, while authorities continue to investigate the cause of the derailment.
