Freight train derails from bridge in Munich, leaving one seriously injured

One person was seriously injured after a freight train derailed and plunged from a bridge in the German city of Munich overnight, police said on June 20.

According to authorities, two freight cars fell approximately five metres from the bridge before coming to rest on a road below, dpa reports. 

Police said the contents of the train were not immediately known, but confirmed that the cargo did not contain hazardous materials and posed no danger to the public.

Emergency services responded to the scene, and the injured person was taken for medical treatment. Further details about the individual's condition were not immediately released.

Officials said it remains unclear when the derailed train cars will be removed, and the affected area could remain closed until June 21.

A spokesperson for rail operator Deutsche Bahn said the accident occurred on a line used exclusively by freight trains. Regional and long-distance passenger rail services have not been affected by the incident.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the derailment.
