French intelligence chief says military solution to Ukraine crisis unlikely Calls for EU involvement
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine will not be resolved through military force, and neither side expects a clear military victory, Nicolas Lerner, the head of French General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI), told media.
Lerner stated, "I am sure of two things. The first is that this war will not be won on the battlefield: whatever the dynamics [of the conflict] in tactical terms, no one expects one of the two states to suffer a military defeat," Caliber.Az reports citing French media.
He further noted that in recent months, "military trends on the battlefield are not playing into Ukraine's hands."
The head of French intelligence also affirmed the belief that the conflict will ultimately be resolved through negotiations, aimed at ensuring "the territorial integrity of Ukraine in the long term."
He emphasized that Europe must play a role in these negotiations, with the issue of security guarantees from EU states being "at the center" of the settlement process, regardless of the negotiation format.
