"Angry" Trump sends Hungarian PM handwritten note over Ukraine oil pipeline attack

22 August 2025 15:48

US President Donald Trump has expressed his anger over recent Ukrainian attacks that disabled the Russian Druzhba oil pipeline, a key energy route supplying Hungary and Slovakia—both NATO allies.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban shared a handwritten note from Trump in a private Facebook group for his supporters, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The note was written in response to Orban’s concerns over the pipeline strikes, which Ukraine claims are aimed at infrastructure supporting Russia’s military effort.

“Viktor—I do not like hearing this,” Trump wrote. “I am very angry about it. Tell Slovakia. You are my great friend.”

The note was also shared on X by Andras Laszlo, a Member of the European Parliament from Orban’s ruling Fidesz party.

The Hungarian leader had initially written to Trump to complain about the Ukrainian strikes on Druzhba and the resulting impact on Hungary’s energy security. In his message, Orban pointed out that the pipeline is the only channel through which Hungary and Slovakia import crude oil.

"This pipeline supplies Hungary and Slovakia, two countries that have no other means of importing crude oil," Orban had stated. "Hungary supports Ukraine with electricity and petrol, in return they bomb [a] pipeline that [supplies] us. Very unfriendly move! We wish President Trump every success in his pursuit for peace."

Ukraine, for its part, has defended the attacks. Kyiv argues that the pipeline also serves Russian military interests, and thus represents a legitimate wartime target.

The issue has sparked a diplomatic rift, with Hungary, an EU and NATO member, maintaining its close relationship with Moscow despite Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Budapest has repeatedly voiced frustration over what it perceives as attempts by Brussels and Kyiv to draw it into the conflict.

Responding to a previous Hungarian complaint, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X: “It is Russia, not Ukraine, who began this war and refuses to end it.”

“Hungary has been told for years that Moscow is an unreliable partner,” Sybiha added. “Despite this, Hungary has made every effort to maintain its reliance on Russia. Even after the full-scale war began. You can now send your complaints—and threats—to your friends in Moscow.”
