China sanctions Japanese firms over military concerns

24 February 2026 13:06

China has imposed new trade restrictions on a number of Japanese firms, placing 20 companies — including Mitsubishi Corporation — on its export control list, effectively barring Chinese exporters from supplying them with dual-use goods.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, the decision was taken on the grounds that the listed companies allegedly “contribute to strengthening Japan’s military capabilities.”

Under the measures, Chinese entities and individuals are prohibited from exporting dual-use items or providing goods of Chinese origin that could have both civilian and military applications to the designated firms. All ongoing related activities must be halted immediately. The ministry noted that in exceptional circumstances, exporters may apply for special authorisation, but such deliveries would require approval from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

Separately, another group of 20 organisations — including Subaru Corporation — has been placed on a monitoring or watch list. The ministry said this step was taken because authorities were unable to verify the final recipients of certain goods or confirm their intended end use.
