Trump claims Washington “safe again” following National Guard deployment

US President Donald Trump declared that the nation's capital has seen a week without a single homicide, crediting the deployment of National Guard troops for what he called a restoration of public safety.

“Washington is safe again,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, citing the absence of murders over a seven-day period, Caliber.Az reports.

“Washington, D.C. is safe again! The crowds are coming back, the spirit is high, and our D.C. National Guard and Police are doing a fantastic job. They are out in force, and are not playing games!!! As bad as it sounds to say, there were no murders this week for the first time in memory. Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City! Washington D.C. will soon be great again!!!” the post by US leader reads.

Earlier this month, Trump ordered the federal government to take control of DC’s police department and deployed National Guard troops – a broad federal effort that has drawn the ire of many city residents.

Trump had teased earlier in the day that he planned to join law enforcement in the streets of DC, though he appeared to scrap those plans for a more standard meet-and-greet with those he has deployed. A source familiar with the matter said that some members of the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, who would handle a presidential movement like this one, had been caught off guard by the president’s announcement.
