Top European leaders to attend Moldova’s Independence Day celebrations
Moldova will host a distinguished lineup of European leaders as part of its Independence Day commemorations on August 27 in Chișinău.
At the invitation of President Maia Sandu, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk are expected to attend, underscoring strong ties between Moldova and its European partners, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Moldovan president’s office.
The three heads of state and government will join President Sandu at the Presidential Palace for a joint press conference before addressing the public during a special concert held in the Great National Assembly Square. This event forms a central part of the nationwide celebrations marking Moldova’s independence.
Just days later, on August 31, the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, will visit Chișinău to participate in the observance of Romanian Language Day, further highlighting cultural and historical bonds between Moldova and Romania.
Moldova formally applied for European Union membership on March 3, 2022, and was subsequently awarded candidate status on June 23 of the same year. The European Union officially commenced accession negotiations with Moldova on June 25, 2024.
