French politician calls for "Frexit" to protect farming sector

Florian Philippot, leader of the French right-wing party Les Patriotes, has said that France’s only option to safeguard its national farming sector is to leave the European Union.

Philippot made the remarks on X amid discussions over a free trade agreement between the EU and MERCOSUR countries.

According to the politician, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to sign the deal on January 12.

He urged farmers to intensify protests, warning that France’s continued EU membership would make the agreement unavoidable.

“There is no other way to save French agriculture,” Philippot said, advocating for what he calls a “Frexit”—a hypothetical French exit from the EU, named in reference to the UK’s Brexit.
