French president slams Iran’s nuclear ambitions, warns of global proliferation risks

30 May 2025 21:28

French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced strong opposition to Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, warning that such a development could trigger a domino effect, leading to nuclear proliferation across both Europe and Asia.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, Macron underscored the unified stance of the E3—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

“The E3 wants to be a reliable and consistent partner to avoid the emergence of any kind of nuclear weapons in Iran. Because this would serve as a basis for proliferation in other countries through a domino effect,” Macron stated.

In outlining the risks of a nuclear-armed Iran, Macron drew parallels with current geopolitical tensions in Europe, notably referencing Ukraine. He warned that Kyiv, which relinquished its nuclear arsenal after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, could reconsider its stance in response to ongoing aggression from Russia. “Certain states in Europe and Asia might think about guaranteeing their security in case of external aggression in the light of nuclear proliferation,” he cautioned.

When asked about his recent proposal to extend France’s nuclear deterrent umbrella to cover other European nations, Macron declined to provide specifics, citing strategic ambiguity. “The day you fully reveal the roadmap to your enemy, you reduce the effectiveness of your deterrence capability,” he said.
