FT: Adultery scandal engulfs UK nuclear sub captain
The captain of a UK nuclear-armed submarine has stepped back from his role after renewed scrutiny linked to his past contact with Labour MP Joani Reid, whose husband was recently arrested on suspicion of spying for China, according to the latest report by the Financial Times.
The Royal Navy had already investigated allegations last year that the married officer had an inappropriate relationship with Reid.
The probe, conducted as a precaution to assess potential blackmail risks, found no breach of security rules and resulted in no disciplinary action. While the two were found to have exchanged messages described by some as flirtatious, Reid disputes that characterisation. There was no physical relationship, and contact between them ended in September.
Fresh security checks were carried out this month after Reid’s husband, David Taylor, was arrested under the UK National Security Act in a counterterrorism investigation into alleged foreign interference targeting British democracy. The Ministry of Defence said it remains confident that no security breach occurred.
Following inquiries from the Financial Times, the officer chose to step back from his position for personal reasons but remains in the Royal Navy.
Reid, MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, has said she has no reason to suspect her husband broke the law and has suspended herself from the Labour whip pending investigations.
Britain’s nuclear deterrent, based on four Vanguard-class submarines carrying Trident missiles, remains one of the country’s most sensitive military assets, with strict security protocols governing personnel and operations.
