FT: Europe eyes “air shield” to secure Ukraine amid stalled ceasefire talks

09 September 2025 09:31

With Moscow showing little sign of accepting a negotiated ceasefire, Western officials are now weighing the creation of a “de facto ceasefire” through the establishment of an American-led “air shield” over Ukraine.

The proposed initiative would involve a major expansion of air defence systems aimed at neutralising Russian drone attacks and, to some extent, cruise missiles, though it would not offer full protection against ballistic missile strikes, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Financial Times (FT).

European allies are expected to play a significant role, with discussions underway about naval deployments to the Black Sea and even the possible use of aircraft carriers to bolster Ukrainian airspace defence. Officials in Brussels acknowledge the risks of relying solely on the assurances of US President Donald Trump, and are therefore pressing for Congressional approval of tougher measures against Russia.

In Washington, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a long-time Republican advocate of a hard line against Moscow, has emerged as a pivotal figure in shaping the legislative push. His support is seen as crucial for securing bipartisan backing for the expanded air defence umbrella.
