G7 calls for political resolution to Gaza conflict
The Group of Seven (G7) has reaffirmed its commitment to an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of Israeli hostages, while urging an increase in humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population.
The remarks were made by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto at a press conference following the first meeting of G7 defence ministers, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
"We insist on a swift political solution based on the coexistence of two states, with security guarantees for both Israel and the Palestinian people," Crosetto stated.
He emphasized that Israel is being asked to conclude its military operation in Lebanon, but "hostilities must also be halted by Hezbollah and Hamas."
Crosetto criticized a recent drone attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence, noting that it does not contribute to stabilizing the situation.
"We believe that Hamas' military wing has been largely defeated, and the attacks on Gaza can now cease," he added.
Although Crosetto could not confirm his planned visit to Israel due to recent developments, he did indicate that he would be discussing Türkiye's potential mediation role in the Middle East, as well as in African conflicts, including Libya and Somalia.
