G7 voices concerns over China’s expanding nuclear arsenal

15 March 2025 09:07

The Group of Seven (G7) nations have expressed growing concern over the rapid expansion of China’s nuclear weapons arsenal, urging the country to take steps toward greater transparency in an effort to reduce strategic risks and promote regional stability.

This call was outlined in a statement issued by the G7 foreign ministers following their recent meeting in Quebec, Canada, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

In the statement, the G7 reiterated their concerns about the ongoing military build-up in China, particularly the accelerating growth of its nuclear capabilities. The foreign ministers emphasized the need for China to engage in open discussions aimed at reducing strategic risks and enhancing global security through increased transparency in its military activities.

“We remain concerned with China’s military build-up and the continued, rapid increase in China’s nuclear weapons arsenal,” the statement read.

They called on China to engage in strategic risk reduction discussions and promote stability through transparency.

The G7's comments reflect growing international unease over China's military modernization and the implications it has for global peace and security. The group urged China to act responsibly in addressing these concerns, highlighting the importance of cooperation in preventing an arms race and ensuring a stable and secure international order.

G7 members emphasized that China should not conduct or condone activities aimed at undermining the security and safety of  communities and the integrity of democratic institutions.

The group expressed concerns about China’s non-market policies and practices that are leading to harmful overcapacity and market distortions. G7 members further called on China to refrain from adopting export control measures that could lead to significant supply chain disruptions. They reiterated that they are not trying to harm China or thwart its economic growth, indeed a growing China that plays by international rules and norms would be of global interest.
