Gas cylinder explosion in Czech restaurant claims six lives

A propane-butane cylinder explosion at a restaurant in the northwest Czech city of Most has claimed six lives and left eight others injured, according to local emergency services. 

The blast occurred late on January 11 evening, triggering a devastating fire that engulfed the building, Caliber.Az reports referencing foreign media.

Around 30 people were evacuated from the restaurant and the surrounding area, with the fire brigade working tirelessly to manage the situation.

According to initial reports from witnesses, the explosion was likely caused by an overturned propane-butane heater.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan confirmed to Czech Radio that the heater, which was situated in the restaurant’s front garden, is believed to be the source of the tragedy. The fire brigade was able to rescue one seriously injured guest, who had been trapped in the bathroom during the blaze.

At the time of the explosion, approximately 20 people were dining at the restaurant, although not all were directly affected by the blast.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, while local officials have expressed their condolences to the victims and their families.
