German opposition AfD calls on Merz to follow UK’s Starmer and step down
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has called on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to resign, drawing a direct comparison with developments in the United Kingdom involving Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In a statement posted on X, the right-wing party said Merz should “follow the example” of Starmer, who has announced plans to step down following what he described as a “dramatic fall” in approval ratings. Starmer has said he will remain in office until a successor is elected.

The AfD argued that politicians who “ignore the interests of their own people” ultimately face political failure, adding: “When will Germany’s political elite finally draw the same conclusions?”
On Monday (June 22), Starmer confirmed he would leave his post at a later date, but did not provide a precise timeline for his departure, saying he would stay on until the transition to a new prime minister is complete.
