German Bundestag intends to recognize "Holodomor" famine as act of genocide

The German Bundestag is going to review a proposal to recognize the fatal man-made mass famine of the 1930s in the Soviet Union as an act of genocide against Ukrainians.

As the Tagesschau reported, the new Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has welcomed the planned recognition of the tragic events from the 1930s during an interview with a German agency, noting the importance of this event, saying it would mean the recognition of the truth, which was attempted to be hidden away for decades.

The timing of the resolution bases itself on the remembrance day of the famine, which Ukraine honours on the fourth Saturday of November, which was on November 26 this year. 

The resolution will be discussed on November 30 in the Bundestag, which has been proposed by all parties of the German coalition, as well as the main opposition fraction to which former Chancellor Merkel's belonged, CDU/CSU.

Ambassador Makeiev stressed, that the recognition of the famine as an act of genocide would also play an important role in the current situation, saying, that "the understanding and processing of the historic context [of the Holodomor] of Russia's current genocidal war efforts is extremely important", according to the Tagesschau.

Caliber.Az recalls, that several millions of Ukrainians died during the mass famine from 1932 to 1933, when a compilation of poor decisions in the Soviet government led to major problems in the grain-producing areas of Ukraine. While the famine affected other parts of the Soviet Union as well, Ukraine was worst hit by the event, which is referred to as "Holodomor", meaning "to kill by starvation" in Ukrainian. According to the Holodomor Museum in Ukraine, the catastrophe was created on purpose for the "ultimate elimination of the Ukrainian opposition regime".
