German chancellor discusses Ukraine war in first call with new UK PM

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham discussed the war in Ukraine during a telephone conversation, the German government said.

Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said Merz congratulated Burnham on taking office. The two leaders expressed their intention to maintain close cooperation between Germany and the United Kingdom and to advance implementation of the Kensington Agreement, the British-German Treaty of Friendship, Caliber.Az reports. 

According to Kornelius, Merz and Burnham also agreed to continue providing broad support to Ukraine.

Burnham became the UK's prime minister on July 20 after being appointed by King Charles III to form a government. His appointment followed the resignation of Keir Starmer, which was accepted by the monarch.
