German chancellor, French president discuss escalating situation in Middle East

Spokesman for the German Federal Government Steffen Hebestreit has said that negotiations were held between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron in Berlin.

“The meeting addressed pressing issues, including the conflict in Ukraine and the escalating situation in the Middle East,” he said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

"The Chancellor and President Macron discussed the situation in the Middle East. They condemned the Iranian missile strikes against Israel. Regarding the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, they reiterated the call from many nations for an immediate ceasefire and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701," he stated.

Moreover, Macron and Scholz reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukraine as long as necessary. Hebestreit also noted that the meeting aimed to align the positions on European policy ahead of the upcoming EU summit in Brussels on October 17-18.

Iran launched dozens of missiles toward Israel on October 1 in what it said was a response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others – potentially taking the region closer to a wider conflict. Dozens of missiles piercing through the skies were observed as sirens blasted across the country.

At least one person was killed and several were injured during the attack, according to the Israeli military. International spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Nadav Shoshani said that one Palestinian was killed in Jericho as a result of the attacks. Israel has vowed to respond to the attack – sparking worries among its allies that the conflict in the Middle East could escalate further.
