German chancellor signals strained ties with Trump
21 March 2026 10:52
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump is not particularly strong.
Merz suggested that relations between the two leaders were not especially positive, highlighting broader political differences. He also voiced criticism of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, arguing that its approach to culture, media, and political discourse differs significantly from European democratic norms, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The German leader emphasised that the values and standards associated with the MAGA movement do not align with his country’s understanding of democracy, pointing to contrasting views on institutional behaviour and public interaction.
