German Chancellor to join UK-led Ukraine talks in London

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to travel to London on March 2 for a crucial meeting on Ukraine, following an invitation from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The visit was confirmed by Steffen Hebestreit, the official spokesperson for the German government, who briefed the press on the details, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

“The discussions will centre on enhancing coordination between European partners and allies in their ongoing support for Ukraine, exploring the prospects of peace talks, and addressing key issues concerning European security,” Hebestreit noted.

He remarked that other European leaders, along with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, and European Council President Charles Michel, have also been invited to attend.

Moreover, Keir Starmer has invited the leaders of the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Czechia, and Romania to a summit on February 27 at the White House. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa are also set to attend.

Before the summit, Starmer will have a morning call with the Baltic states and meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street to discuss the war with Russia. He is also scheduled for one-on-one talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to build on recent discussions in Paris, focusing on military support for Ukraine and increasing economic pressure on Russia.

Starmer reiterated that Ukraine must be involved in any peace talks and highlighted the importance of Europe strengthening its defence for collective security.
