German defence company to build Europe's largest gunpowder plant

German defence company Rheinmetall is set to begin construction of one of Europe's largest gunpowder plants in southern Germany, Germany's Defence Ministry has announced.

It said the facility will be built at Rheinmetall's historic production site in Aschau am Inn, Bavaria, where around 90 hectares of land have been allocated for the project, Caliber.Az reports.

According to Rheinmetall, the new plant will expand production capacity for propellant charge components used in barrel artillery and other large-calibre weapons.

The groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for July 22, will be attended by Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder and German Parliamentary State Secretary for Defence Nils Schmid.
