German FM addresses climate crisis as key security threat Ahead of COP29

19 October 2024 09:54

At a press conference in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock underscored the climate crisis as the most pressing security threat of time, ahead of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, set to take place in Baku.

Baerbock underlined that while the climate crisis poses significant challenges, it also presents opportunities for enhancing security, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

She noted that lower atmospheric temperatures can help reduce conflicts, thereby contributing to regional peace.

“The success of climate protection hinges on the active participation of all stakeholders,” Baerbock stated, emphasizing the need for collaboration across various sectors. She called for involvement from large industrial corporations, labor unions, and individuals alike, urging contributions from diverse regions, from Lusatia in Germany to Kenya.

Her remarks set the stage for COP29, where global leaders will gather to discuss urgent climate action and foster international cooperation in addressing the myriad challenges posed by climate change.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held in Azerbaijan on November 11-22. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. During two weeks, Baku will become a global hub, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.  The abbreviation COP means "Conference of the Parties" and refers to the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC.
