Media: German FM chooses family over leadership role in Bundestag

05 March 2025 16:02

Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock has announced that she will not seek the position of co-chair of the Green Party faction in the Bundestag, following the formation of the new government.

This decision was revealed in a letter obtained by German media, in which Baerbock informed her faction members of her choice, Caliber.Az reports.

The minister stated that, for personal reasons, she has decided to temporarily step back from the spotlight and will not put herself forward for a leadership role within the Green Party faction in the Bundestag. Baerbock clarified that she will continue her work in the Bundestag as a regular member but does not intend to pursue the position of chair of any parliamentary committee.

Baerbock, who has played a significant role in Germany’s foreign policy as the country's foreign minister, explained that after years of intense work within the party, including her leadership in the ministry, she now feels the need to focus on family.

Annalena Baerbock is a German politician and a member of the Green Party (Die Grünen). Born in 1980, she became Germany's Foreign Minister in December 2021, making her one of the most prominent figures in German politics. Prior to her appointment as Foreign Minister, Baerbock was co-chair of the Green Party and has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013. She is known for her strong stance on environmental issues, human rights, and European integration. Baerbock has also been an advocate for a more assertive foreign policy for Germany, focusing on climate diplomacy and strengthening Europe’s role in global geopolitics. Throughout her career, she has gained attention for her ability to engage on complex issues such as the EU’s foreign relations, the climate crisis, and international security.
