Germany pushes for EU sanctions against Georgia
The German Foreign Ministry intends to take a more active stance in advocating for the imposition of sanctions against Georgia.
The ministry aims to more vigorously support the possibility of EU sanctions against the Georgian government, Caliber.Az reports citing German media.
Notably, Anna Lührmann, Germany’s Minister of State for European Affairs, has been a particularly strong proponent of sanctions against Georgia.
Earlier, it was reported that EU foreign ministers will discuss the potential imposition of new sanctions due to the situation in Georgia during their meeting on December 16.
Protests have been ongoing in Tbilisi and other cities across Georgia since November 28, following the government's announcement to suspend the country's EU accession talks until 2028. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that this decision was driven by the unacceptable actions of European politicians, who, in his view, use grants and loans as tools of blackmail.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on the Georgian authorities in response to the situation.
