German Helsing to supply Ukraine with new batch of AI-equipped kamikaze drones
German defence company Helsing has announced it will deliver 6,000 kamikaze drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to Ukraine in 2025.
The drones in question are the HX-2 models, which have a range of up to 100 kilometres. The UAVs are capable of reaching speeds of up to 220 km/h and can be armed with munitions designed to target tanks and buildings, Caliber.Az reports per German media.
One of the key features of the HX-2 drones is their integration of AI, which enables them to avoid electronic warfare and operate effectively in adverse weather conditions. The AI also allows the drones to autonomously carry out the final stage of an attack, eliminating the need for operator input during the critical moment of the strike.
This new delivery follows Helsing's previous shipment of 4,000 drones to Ukraine in 2024. The value of the upcoming 6,000-drone delivery is estimated to be several hundred million euros. The funds for this order are expected to be covered by €3 billion aid package allocated to Ukraine, although the package has been temporarily blocked by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Despite this, Helsing remains optimistic that the new German government will secure the necessary funds for the deal.
To fulfill the contract, Helsing has launched a new factory in Germany that will produce 1,000 drones per month.
The addition of these advanced drones is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's defence capabilities, providing a powerful tool for targeting enemy positions and fortifications with precision.
