German interior minister makes surprise visit to Israel

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has made an unannounced visit to Israel, where he is scheduled to hold meetings throughout the day with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as with the heads of the country's Foreign and Defence Ministries, as reported by Deutsche Welle (DW).

According to Dobrindt, the visit is aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of security and demonstrating support for Israel as a strategic partner in the fight against terrorism, per Caliber.Az.

“We need to be on the ground to better understand the situation. Israel is our closest ally in countering terror,” the minister emphasised.

"Supporting Israel involves holding talks on the ground and getting an idea of the situation," Dobrindt said ahead of the trip.

"I want to show that we support Israel as our closest partner in the fight against terror." 

The conservative politician also said he wants Germany to benefit from Israel's military experience.

"Israel is ahead of us, especially in cyber defense and civil protection," Dobrindt said. "We also need to adapt more to new threat situations." 

"We will work closely with Israel on this," he added.

He also noted that Germany intends to learn from Israel's experience in cybersecurity and civil protection, adapting to new challenges.
