German MFA: Baerbock had no idea of her grandfather's Nazi past

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was unaware of her grandfather Waldemar Baerbock's (1913-2016) Nazi past, the Bild newspaper reports citing a statement from the German Foreign Ministry.

According to the newspaper, Waldemar Baerbock was an "unconditional Nazi", had read Hitler's Mein Kampf and was said to have "fully supported the Nazi cause". He was also awarded the Nazi Cross of Military Merit with swords in 1944.

The German Foreign Ministry said that Annalena Baerbock was not aware of the content of the documents. At the same time, the German tabloid Bild explains that such characterisations "almost always" contain such wording, leaving the question of Waldemar Baerbock's real attitude to National Socialism unanswered.
