German MP labels Merz “chancellor of Ukraine” over aid policy
A German opposition lawmaker has criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Ukraine policy, accusing him of prioritising Kyiv over domestic concerns.
Markus-Cornel Frohnmaier, a Bundestag member from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said on social media platform X that Merz’s level of support for Ukraine suggested he was acting more as “the chancellor of Ukraine” than of Germany.
“How pathetic is this? The ‘aid measures’ of the Merz government, which will not even bring many people 50 euros per month, cost the state 10 billion euros,” Frohnmaier wrote.
The lawmaker added that Germany is expected to allocate 11.5 billion euros in support to Ukraine this year. He questioned whether the government’s spending priorities adequately reflect the needs of ordinary German citizens.
