German opposition figure attacks chancellor over budget plans
Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), has sharply criticised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the government’s new budget proposals, accusing him of misleading voters and damaging the country’s future.
In a post on the social media platform X, Wagenknecht argued that the planned 2027 budget would significantly increase public debt and prioritise record levels of military spending. She described the proposals as a major setback for Germany’s long-term economic stability, Caliber.Az reports.

The opposition leader also accused Merz of breaking campaign promises, noting that he had pledged before the election to address national challenges without raising taxes or increasing borrowing. She claimed that the current plans contradict those commitments and reflect poor leadership.
Wagenknecht concluded that the chancellor’s approach to economic policy risked undermining public trust and weakening the country’s prospects.
