German opposition leader demands European Commission chief’s resignation over US trade deal
Sahra Wagenknecht –the leader of German newly established political party For Reason and Justice (BSW), has publicly called for the resignation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The demand follows the conclusion of a controversial trade agreement with US President Donald Trump, which Wagenknecht has strongly criticized.
“This is not a trade deal, but a real disaster, for which von der Leyen must answer,” Wagenknecht stated on her official X platform, Caliber.Az reports.
She warned that the agreement poses a serious threat to Germany’s economic stability and deemed its implementation “unacceptable.”
Wagenknecht, a vocal critic of the current EU leadership and economic policy direction, urged the German government—as well as other EU member states—to push for von der Leyen’s removal. While details of the trade agreement have not been made public, Wagenknecht’s remarks suggest that she believes the deal could disproportionately impact Germany’s industrial and export sectors.
In a further statement, Wagenknecht called for the restoration of oil and gas imports from Russia, which were largely curtailed following the start of the war in Ukraine. She described resuming energy ties with Moscow as “the only right way” to stabilize the German economy, despite the EU's ongoing efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce dependency on Russian supplies.
